From vote to self-determination
Elections, free speech, and separation of powers are necessary, but not sufficient. Democracy becomes stable when the citizen has not only the right to vote, but also the real capacity to think, distinguish, decide, and participate.
Subject-centered democracy
This model shifts the criterion of democracy from procedural legitimacy alone to subject-based legitimacy: how well institutions protect the citizen’s source of decision, informed judgment, free will, value orientation, and responsible participation.
The link between state and citizen
A self-determined citizen enables a self-determined state. If the citizen remains manipulated, afraid, or dependent, democratic form may survive while democratic substance weakens.
Institutional protection
Civic self-determination must be protected not only by declarations of rights, but by functioning institutions: independent courts, intelligible administration, transparent decisions, accountable authority, protected free speech, quality public information, and real mechanisms of participation.
Public will
Democracy cannot rest only on the sum of individual opinions. It requires public will: the capacity to recognize common problems, hear different positions, form decisions, and carry responsibility for consequences.
A new deepening of democracy
Self-determination-based democracy does not reject classical democracy. It deepens it by adding criteria of education, information resilience, economic autonomy, technological transparency, local participation, and public responsibility.
Political consequence
If democracy only legitimizes power, the citizen can remain an observer. If its goal is self-determination, politics must create thinking citizens, open institutions, responsible leadership, and a trustworthy public environment.
